Direct Simulation Monte Carlo: The Past 40 Years and the Future (2003)

Image designed by Alejandro Garcia and produced by Ruben Perez.

This piece was created for the web site and poster advertising a workshop celebrating the 40th anniversary of Direct Simulation Monte Carlo, a computer algorithm that I've been using for the past 20 years. The algorithm simulates a dilute gas, using random numbers to select and execute collisions among the molecules, hence the "Monte Carlo" in the name. This gave me the idea of designing an image of a "gas of dice." Ruben Perez, who was a student at SJSU and now works for Industrial Light and Magic, produced the CGI.
